NFL Week 12 Picks

Standard

It’s getting colder (at least here where I live at), Thanksgiving is coming in a week from today, and the days are getting shorter, it must mean one thing: the NFL regular season is coming to an end in a few more weeks. The week that was Week 11 was quite possibly the worst that I have had this season in a record of 8-7. Might’ve been 9-6 if the refs made the correct call in the New England/Carolina game, however refs make mistakes. Unfortunately, even a blind bat would see that Rob Gronkowski was held and even Ray Charles would call it a penalty.

There are 14 games on the slate as this is the last week for bye weeks for teams this season. Some good games that you should definitely watch if you have NFL Sunday ticket or in the right market. Biggest one for me is the 14th time that Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will meet. Arguably two of the best quarterbacks in the game today. Here’s the picks:

New Orleans @ Atlanta: Saints. New Orleans is 2-2 on the road this season, despite this stat the Falcons are merely a shadow of the team that they were last year. Blame it on Matt Ryan or not, the Falcons are a dumpster fire. Saints win.

Minnesota @ Green Bay: Packers. Obviously I’m going with the Packers, even if they suck when Aaron Rodgers is on the sideline. Vikings could win it but as of yet they have notched a “W” on the road, so I will still go with the Packers.

New York Jets @ Baltimore: What will I pick? The Ravens. The Jets just are an unknown. When they play well they are united, when they lose they are dysfunctional. Still the Jets are 5-5 in a league where most experts (perhaps I could be one, or not) picked them to finish near dead last. Doesn’t hurt to pick the Ravens.

Pittsburgh @ Cleveland: Steelers. Pittsburgh has won 4 of their last 6 games, while on a 2-game winning streak. Gotta feel good about the Steelers right now since the AFC North is pretty wide open. Cleveland is having a pretty nice year for themselves but I’m going with the Black and Gold.

Tampa Bay @ Detroit: Lions. The Motor City Kitties suffered a setback last week at Heinz Field but to stay competitive in the NFC North, the Lions need to win the games that they should win.

San Diego @ Kansas City: Chiefs. I’m going on a whim with this one. The Chiefs played against Denver last week and lost by a decent margin. All the negatives with the Chiefs showed against the Broncos. Still, to stay competitive against the premiere team in the Broncos is still impressive. Chargers are a decent story.

Carolina @ Miami: Panthers. The big story during this middle of the season is the Panthers. Cam Newton has revitalized his career after his slump last year. Of course it also helps if your team’s defense is a top 5 defense. Give me the Panthers!

Indianapolis @ Arizona: Colts. Don’t get me wrong, this is a hard pick to choose. Chuck Pagano visits Bruce Arians who was Pagano’s assistant in Indy last season when Pagano was in the hospital. Definitely a good matchup to watch if you really hate the other late games.

Tennessee @ Oakland: Nobody. Just kidding. This game is such a toss-up, I’d watch it for maybe 5 seconds then turn the channel if I was getting paid to watch NFL games. I’d take the Raiders just because I’ve dumped so much crap on Raiders fans over the years that I feel bad about not picking them. Vegas’ line is +1 on the Raiders.

Dallas @ New York Giants: Giants. The last time these two teams played, Tony Romo played like Eli Manning and Eli Manning played like Tony Romo. G-men are on a 4 game winning streak I like the Gints going on to win a close game at home.

Chicago @ St. Louis: Bears. The Rams are hosting the Bears in a game that might’ve looked pretty good if Sam Bradford was playing in it. The classy organization that is the Rams are having a suite for the victims in the Illinois Tornado victims while the game is going on. Very cool.

Jacksonville @ Houston: Houston. I’m going to admit. I am a pretty crazy person. My guilty pleasure was watching Golden Girls. I played World Of Warcraft when I was in college (highest level was like 35 as a Human Paladin). I am unfortunately not crazy enough to pick the Jaguars in this game. Unless this game is a stark reminder of the Jaguars/Titans game this will be the 10th loss for the Jags this season.

Denver @ New England: Patriots. The sentence including Peyton Manning and Gillette Stadium has never gone well. History has said it. This game is the return of Wes Welker to New England and this game will be the best game of the week and the Manning/Brady games have never been a letdown. Patriots will shock the world!

San Francisco @ Washington: 49ers. Even the bandwagon Niners fans will agree with me that the same Niners team that took the league by storm has seen its problems. However, the Niners will get back to winning ways starting with this game. RGIII hasn’t had the best sophomore season, the Redskins are D-O-N-E.

NFL Week 11 picks

Standard

The eleventh week of NFL action is coming with six weeks left in the regular season to go. In the previous week of NFL action, I won 8 games out of 14 games with a record of 8-6. I pretty much got lucky with the Jaguars pick over the Titans last week. My luck wasn’t so well with the Colts getting manhandled by the Rams… the St. Louis Rams, yeah. Going to do these early since my birthday (I turn 25, just in case you cared) and I thought I should do these to get it out of the way. Hopefully I have a better week this week as there will be 15 games. Here are the picks:

Indianapolis @ Tennessee: Colts. Let’s be honest, the Rams embarrassed the Colts last week and to do it again on national televised game on Thursday would be disrespectful. Take them down.

Green Bay @ New York Giants: Packers. Even if the Packers were 9-0 or 0-9 I would still pick them, I couldn’t care less. However, this is an important game for both teams to try and stay on path for a playoff spot. Tolzien has to have a good game and the defense has to pick it up lest there will be a spanking, in which case I will not see it as I will be at work… again.

New York Jets @ Buffalo: Jets. The last time these two teams met, it was a good game, and the Jets have surprised a few people. I like them.

Baltimore @ Chicago: Bears. Why not da Bears? The Ravens are washed up, yes washed up. I mean to go against the Bears at Soldier Field… no way.

Cleveland @ Cincinnati: Browns. IDGAF! The Bengals will never be picked by me again for the rest of the season. Go Brownies!

Oakland @ Houston: Raiders. Texans are favored by 7 in this game, somehow I want to drink some of the Raiders kool-aid (I imagine it to be not that tasty) and pick them as the upset special. Other than that Toilet Bowl.

Arizona @ Jacksonville: Cardinals. Arizona goes on a cross-country trip to Jacksonville to take on the 1-win Jaguars. Don’t like the Jaguars chances in this one.

Washington @ Philadelphia: Eagles. I feel if there’s any team that isn’t super flawed, it would be the Eagles, especially now that they found their guy in Nick Foles to lead them to a potential division title and a playoff push.

Detroit @ Pittsburgh: Lions. If this matchup took place years ago, the Steelers would win, but it seems to be a season in reversal for both of them. Both teams have history, tradition, but the Lions win it. Its always fun when the NFC North teams take on the AFC North teams.

Atlanta @ Tampa Bay: Falcons. Another toilet bowl game featuring two of the worst NFC teams this season. However, the Falcons have more talent than the Bucs, so I’ll still take the Falcons. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Buccaneers win this one.

San Diego @ Miami: San Diego. The Dolphins had a bad loss against the Buccaneers last week, the Chargers look pretty good.

San Francisco @ New Orleans: Saints. Best game of the week, even if you’re a casual fan. Saints are improved, the 49ers looking to regain ground in the division after a loss to the Panthers, I like the Saints at home.

Minnesota @ Seattle: Seahawks. The Vikings have a chance at the 12th man? Doubtful.

Kansas City @ Denver: Broncos. The game that everyone has been waiting for since both of these teams have been winning games. The Chiefs only chance in this one is that its a low-scoring game and hang with the Broncos.

New England @ Carolina: Patriots. A pretty good matchup in terms of a Monday Night Football one. ESPN did have it right with this one. I like the Panthers but the Patriots are pretty good eh?

NFL Week 9 Picks

Standard

As I did a post for Thursday night, I forgot to do some people a favor and to post my picks for the rest of the week. To be fair, I was at work, and I was relaxing and then I realized that if I didn’t post my pick for TNF. The undefeated streak is over, the Bengals screwed up just when people wanted to believe in them, they blow. Still I had a good week in picks last week with 10 wins and 3 losses. 13 games this week, get psyched! Trying to write these picks while watching “How I Met Your Mother,” good show.

Kansas City @ Buffalo: Chiefs

Atlanta @ Carolina: Panthers

New Orleans @ New York Jets: Saints.

San Diego @ Washington: Washington.

Philadelphia @ Oakland: Eagles. If you lose this game, you will never be picked by me again! Mark my words!

Tampa Bay @ Seattle: Seahawks.

Baltimore @ Cleveland: Ravens.

Pittsburgh @ New England: Patriots.

Minnesota @ Dallas: Cowboys.

Indianapolis @ Houston: Colts.

Tennessee @ St. Louis: Titans.

Chicago @ Green Bay: Packers.

The Happy, Angry, Excited, Devastated, Hopeful Post (Red Sox won the World Series!)

Standard

You could say that any champion is built from the bottom to the top. Some take years to build (e.g. Muhammad Ali, Oakland Raiders, New Orleans Saints, Pre-Championship Michael Jordan years) or it just takes one spectacular season (1985 Chicago Bears, 1991 Minnesota Twins, etc.) but others take something much more to achieve. Through tragedy, drama, chicken, beer, and a man named Manny Ramirez, the Boston Red Sox achieved something that only the bottom cellars of the four major sports leagues (NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA) can only dream of.

After the 2007 championship season, the Red Sox was put under pressure to keep the title in Boston but it wasn’t the case as their almost perennial all-star Manny Ramirez, continued to bloat his ego, move to 1st after grounding out seconds after trying to reach base (I think it took him like 6-7 seconds to reach a base and get grounded out). The Red Sox did go to the playoffs and reached the ALCS to take on the surprising Tampa Bay Rays. It took seven long, hard games but it wasn’t the Red Sox that would go on to take on the Phillies in the Fall Classic that year.

After making the wild-card spot in 2009 and getting swept by the Anaheim Angels, it looked like the talent that Boston had over the years was starting to grow old and weary. In 2010 the Red Sox missed the playoffs for the first time since 2006, a team that included Victor Martinez (before he became a Tiger, such a wuss), Adrian Beltre (whom we should’ve kept), and Josh Reddick (you’re welcome Oakland). Still the 2010 Red Sox finished with a winning record and finished 4 games better than the Toronto Blue Jays (before they became champions of the offseason, and made good use of the “Universal sign of choking” sign). Nothing would come more painful than the season that came next.

2011 seemed to be a season that would guarantee the Sox a spot in the playoffs and perhaps a shot to win the World Series on the eve of the 100th Anniversary of the opening of Fenway Park back in 1912. Everything went well it seemed, sure Carl Crawford had his ups and downs, but Adrian Gonzales did not disappoint (the way he hit, ran, and played defense just made you drool). The season went well despite a few bumps and holes, which is normal if you follow a team that you love, but if you could give the Red Sox a playoff spot from April to September you’d count your sox to bet that this team would make it to the playoffs.

Based on odds, the Boston Red Sox would make the playoffs based on the percentage of 99.6%. This was on September 3rd, which the wrong turn of wrong turns would do the Red Sox in. ESPN covered it like it was nothing, TMZ felt like it was something that was better than Britney Spears shaving her head, hell even farmers probably talked about it. Here’s the collapse in a glance: 11-game collapse, 9 consecutive blown saves, 7-20 record in September, 10,000 chickens (Colonel Sanders would go apeshit) and 5,000 Blue Moon’s (I had to slip it in, despite no knowledge what beer it was) was consumed that time. Here’s what it felt like: imagine going through so many breakups, car accidents, bad days, injuries, and you just couldn’t do anything about it. Like it was meant to happen. You couldn’t get away from it.

September 28th and the day after was the worst day that I have felt as a sports fan in my entire lifetime. The Red Sox had the chance to get to the playoffs and slay the demons that they were facing for the entire month, they were in Baltimore, and right next to them was the evil Tampa Bay Rays waiting for them to blow it. I remember it fondly.

I was in my 5th year of college, after coming back from being at an unplugged music event at my alma mater’s cafeteria, I listened to friends play music (one even played “American Girl” I recall) and I kept looking at my phone at the Red Sox @ Orioles score and they certainly kept it interesting. After it was done and said with I quickly turned it to ESPN which showed the Red Sox-Orioles game which was in the 9th and as I got comfy, they blew a save. To add more insult to injury they quickly turned it to the Yankees-Rays game and Evan Longoria hits a walk-off in the 12th inning and just like that the fucking Rays were in the playoffs and the Red Sox choked their way into the worst collapse in professional sports history.

After that much of the ingredients that had given the Red Sox the championship glory years before were gone. Terry Francona out the door, Jonathan Papelbon goes into free agency and becomes a Phillie, Theo Epstein gets shown the door and starts a project (a very extensive project) with the Chicago Cubs, while Josh Beckett, John Lackey, Jon Lester the, chicken and beer dinner players were in the clear and still played into the 2012 season.

What 2012 is was much more than what 2011 had brought to the table. It was just a continuation, an extension of the nightmare that the last month of 2011. Though with less chicken and beer, the drama was still there.

I could go on all night about the horrors of 2012 but essentially it came down to two things that turned the franchise around: August 25th, and October 4th. The day in August was both a blessing and yet a feeling of uncertainty. The blessing was that it was the largest salary dump in sports history. To get rid of these salary-pigs in Gonzales, Beckett, and Crawford felt good. It meant that we could go back to our roots and get players that produced more bang for the buck. The uncertainty part was who? Who could possibly replace these players, there could’ve been many players that management could’ve chosen, what they were only me and my fellow Red Sox fans could possibly think of. October 4th, a day that was cherished by anyone that is/was a Red Sox fan: Bobby Valentine was fired, sacked, dumped, and divorced, quite possibly the best move that the Red Sox made all year. That winter was a hard one to endure, the Yankees were shitting on us for our losing ways, the Giants won their 7th title beating the Tigers (at the time tying us for the all-time World Series titles won), and certainly who could forget the supposed “Mayans forgot to include 12/22/2012 in their calendar, but since they didn’t caused everyone to think that possibly the end of the world would happen the day before” myth, which us Sox fans felt that we would never see the Sox win another title before the end of the world. A Boston Red Sox team that wouldn’t include the drama, the players that hated the team as much as its fans hated them, a team that went back to its roots of playing great pitching, good hitting, and timely defense, a team that wouldn’t have a last-place finish, a team that wouldn’t have its worst season since the Beatles would release Rubber Soul, and one more year of playing concerts before calling it good in 1966.

2013 began with optimism, the hiring of John Farrell was promising, but nothing was guaranteed. The Red Sox would sign David Ross, Shane Victorino, Jonny Gomes, Mike Napoli, Koji Uehara, and Stephen Drew during the offseason. The acquisitions were not of the Theo Epstein signings in 2011, but of a different sense. My aunt, who lives in Portland, Maine, commented during the playoffs that it was of a “Moneyball” signings. Meaning that these players were good in certain statistics and situations that the Red Sox got for not a lot of money.

The season got off to a good start, an 18-8 record in April, their best record during a month since easily 2011. Even as ESPN prepared to have the first game to have (by coincidence) the Red Sox play against the Yankees and won the game. Suddenly the culture changed and if it was John Farrell was the case or not, the Red Sox were now watchable and enjoyable.

The turning point of this post, the climax, happened with a tragedy. While I didn’t witness it, or saw it happen, I felt, like many of my Red Sox fans, the tragedy of losing someone dear to them, for I knew the pain of loss. It was a rallying cry for not just the team, but the city of Boston and quite possibly the entire region. My aunt had lived in Boston for a good long time and she had lived in the general area where the accused had lived and had the standoff of standoffs. It was destiny for the city to rally on the phrase “Boston Strong!”

Three of the four professional sports teams were still in play during that time. Celtics squeaked into a 7th seed spot in the playoffs, the Bruins a unlikely favorite to get to the Stanley Cup Finals, and the Red Sox having started their season. Out of all these three teams, two of them reached the championship match, out of the two, one became champions. The Celtics did put up a fight against the New York Knicks and nearly put the Knickerbockers on their knees towards a 7-game series but ended up winning the series in 6. The Boston Bruins reached the Stanley Cup Finals against the heavily favored Chicago Blackhawks and took them to 6 games when the Bruins choked by giving up 2 goals in the last 90 seconds of the 3rd period. The Red Sox were the last chance to give the city a chance to celebrate and to have a relief, a closure to a horrific chapter in their cities history.

The 2013 Boston Red Sox finished with the best record in the American League with a 97-65 record, homefield advantage throughout the American League playoffs and World Series. Their run began with the team that had been a thorn in their side for five years, the Tampa Bay Rays, They would beat the devilish Rays (see what I did there?) in four games in the ALDS with their biggest challenge coming to them in a crazy way. In their way towards a potential 13th American League pennant was the Detroit Tigers, a team that has been in their 3rd straight trip to the American League Championship Series, and knew how to get to the Fall Classic. It was a slugfest. Detroit took game 1, Boston game 2, Boston again in game 3, Detroit tied it up in game 4, Boston survived a rally in game 5, and Boston cruised on with a victory in game 6.

It was their 13th American League pennant. They had won the title in 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, and 2007. They lost in the Fall Classic in 1946, 1967, 1975, and 1986. In ’46 and ’67 they faced off against the St. Louis Cardinals and lost. The 2004 team took on the Redbirds, which were favored to win, and did what Ted Williams and/or Carl Yaztremski could not do, beat the Cardinals in the Fall classic.

This series was different the Cardinals won in 2006, Red Sox won in 2007, Cardinals in 2011, so certainly this series meant something to both teams. The Red Sox exercised their bats in game one, to beat the Cards 8-1. In game two, the Red Sox took the lead after a David Ortiz two-run homer in the 6th, but the Cardinals scored three in the 7th on a bad throw by Jarrod Saltalamacchia to third base, Cardinals won 4-2. Game 3 was a classic, all to the end, then with runners on 2nd and 3rd base with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th. A grounder to 2nd Pedroia throws it to Salty to get the 2nd out and thus throws it to 3rd where Will Middlebrooks fucks up the bad throw by Salty and tries to throw his legs up to slow down Allen Craig, which happened, but as he ran to home it wasn’t an out, it ended in a walk-off. As much as it pained me to see it happen that way afterwards (I was working the closing shift at Kohls, where you couldn’t really have electronics on the floor) Will obstructed Craig and thus the Cardinals took game 3 to take a 2-1 lead in the series which made me and possibly many others doubt about the quest to win a championship for the city of Boston. Game four was a desperate game for the Sox as they needed to have a good start for Clay Bucholz, who wasn’t part of the 2007 squad, and their bats to wake up. Jonny Gomes rose to the occasion on a three-run homer to take a 4-2 win and to force a game 6 in Boston. Game five was possibly the most interesting game of the series outside of game three. The pitching duel of Jon Lester and Adam Wainwright was a sight to behold. Late in the game tied 1-1 at the top of the 7th inning, David Ross hit a ground-rule double and Jacoby Ellsbury hit a RBI single to give the Red Sox a 2 run cushion to gain a game five victory 3-1, heading back to Boston. Game six was what many had felt, the Cardinals needed to have a miracle start for Michael Wacha, and the Red Sox needed was just John Lackey and the bats to come through for him. The Cardinals walked David Ortiz but by the end it wasn’t enough to stave off the Beantown bats as they scored 6 runs in two innings, and it was all that the Red Sox needed.

It was relief, a conclusion, a reassurance. This is what I felt after the final pitch was recorded. All the bullshit, the heartbreak, the drama, the chicken ‘n beer, the Man-Ram, the taunts from some people, it didn’t matter anymore, the Red Sox were World Champions of Baseball, their 8th championship in franchise history. Their 3rd title since 2004, their first title-clincher at home since 1918. They move to 4th all-time championships with the Yankees 27, Cardinals 11, Athletics 9.

It nearly made me cry, or at least sob as they celebrated on the field. At the end of it all, I played “Tessie” by the Dropkick Murphy’s. While life moves on and baseball is done until February, the night of October 30th, 2013 will always be remembered as the day that hope was restored to the city of Boston and that years of heartbreak conclude in a championship that both the team and its fans will enjoy for years to come.

“Red Sox, you are the only, only, only.”

‘Nuff Said.

NFL Week 7 Mini-Recap, Week 8 Picks

Standard

Thursday night! Let’s get ready for Thursday Night! Yeah! I’m feeling good right now as you can tell. NBA season starting soon, Red Sox in the World Series (up 1-0 in the series), and I finished 9-6 (yikes) in picks last week. Some interesting games last week, some upsets with the Colts shocking almost everyone in beating the Broncos. Patriots lost on a call that most people didn’t know until now. My pick of the Bills beating the Dolphins made me look good. With that being said I’m definitely feeling good right now. Day off today from work with almost a month away from Black Friday (yep I’m excited).

Will Greg Schiano walk the plank after tonight’s game? Will the Jaguars ever get a win? Will the Raiders or the Steelers win their third game this season and rekindle their 70’s rivalry? Will Tom go on a second date with Zooey Deschanel this week? All these questions and more in this weeks picks!

Carolina @ Tampa Bay: Panthers. This one is pretty easy to decipher, the Panthers are playing good football at this point of the season, while the Buccaneers are a sinking ship. Undefeated streak continues on Thursday nights!

Green Bay @ Minnesota: Packers. Another pretty easy one at this point. The first game with Greg Jennings as a Viking versus his former captain, Aaron Rodgers, I’m sure tempers will flare with this one. Game is on NBC and I’ll still take the Packers.

Dallas @ Detroit: Lions. Despite the loss to the Bengals last week, the Lions seem like a good pick in this one, even though Tony Romo has been playing good football. It could go either way, but I’ll stick with the Detroit Kitties.

San Francisco @ Jacksonville: 49ers. Does anyone feel good about picking the Jaguars in this one? You’re probably nuts in taking the Jags in this one. Niners win it.

Cleveland @ Kansas City: Chiefs. This Chiefs team I haven’t really gotten time to watch them but despite this sad fact, I like their chances to continue to stay unbeaten against a Browns team that had something going for them this season.

Miami @ New England: Patriots. Red Sox playing inspiring well and the Patriots will find themselves taking some of the good vibe from them and win against the Dolphins in this one. Yes the Patriots got hosed, yes it was a good and bad call, and yes I’m sort of a Boston homer, the Packers still own my heart.

Buffalo @ New Orleans: Saints. Buffalo Bills getting a chance to win at the SuperDome which is a very loud building when the Saints are playing good. Bills got no chance. By the way, the second date never happened, Zooey broke my heart, sadly I had to work when New Girl was on TV. I do have to think of something to regain my hold on her.

New York Giants @ Philadelphia: Giants. The G-men finally got their first win on Monday, the Eagles feel like a train wreck at quarterback, and I hope the Gints continue to salvage their season.

New York Jets @ Cincinnati: Bengals. The Bengals got a good win on the road against the Lions and I’m not sure the Jets got the power to beat the Bengirls in the Jungle.

Pittsburgh @ Oakland: Steelers. The Steelers are 2-4 on the season at this point. To beat the Super Bowl champs, which is in turn your rival, at home has to give you something good to think about. Raiders could win, but the talent aspect goes to the Steelers.

Atlanta @ Arizona: Falcons. Oddly enough, Vegas is giving the Cardinals the edge in this one (no pun intended). This game feels queasy to me, the Falcons should be the favorites despite their record but this game reminds me of my alma mater’s cafeteria food (mostly bad).

Washington @ Denver: Broncos. I’m sure you’re asking “Why the Broncos, Tom? You always pick the Broncos even though they lost to the Colts last week.” Sure I do pick the Broncos, maybe I’m playing the safe card but maybe I’m playing the “I’m not an idiot” card.

Seattle @ St. Louis: Seahawks. Well this game might actually be watchable unlike the Giants-Vikings game. Rams look like a dumpster fire now that Sam Bradford is out, the Seabirds drop a deuce on the Rams.

2013:
Week 1: 12-4
Week 2: 11-5
Week 3: 7-9
Week 4: 11-4
Week 5: 10-4
Week 6: 9-5
Week 7: 9-6

NFL Week 7 Picks + Mini recap

Standard

Another week, another post of my picks for the upcoming NFL slate of games. Doing it a bit early this time around since I have work during the day (and not necessarily during the night). Typing this up while the Red Sox play the Tigers in game 4. Like the Red Sox chances in getting to the World Series but also like the Tigers as well. Tigers up by 6 in the 4th inning. I did pick the Tigers to represent the AL in the Fall Classic but its still a win-win if the Red Sox get there since they are my team.

Last week there were 15 games on the slate and I won 9 out of 15 games with a record of 9-5. Not bad but not good record in terms of what I have been getting so far this season but still gotta feel good about it. Impressive wins by the Panthers, Rams, and Patriots last week. Who will I pick to keep my unbeaten streak on Thursday Night Football alive? Will the Giants win their first game at home against the Vikings? Will Peyton Manning get the last laugh in his return trip to Indianapolis, or will Andrew Luck surpass the shadow that once graced the franchise for over a decade? Will Zooey Deschanel break the ice and ask me out for a date? Will Tom ever stop this celeb crush madness and actually find a girl that isn’t famous? All these questions and more in this weeks picks!

Seattle @ Arizona: Seahawks. A lot of people are saying this is a trap game, that the Seahawks will find a way to blow it, and that the Arizona Cardinals will steal this one in front of their own fans. I say can it! Seahawks are a top 10 team in terms of offense and defense, what do the Cardinals have? Seahawks win it.

Cleveland @ Green Bay: Packers. I like this matchup. Definitely cheesy oozy goodness. Got the day off from work, the game is on in my area, the Packers riding a 2-game winning streak, gotta feel good about this one. Pack win it.

Tampa Bay @ Atlanta: Falcons. Two words describe this game. Toilet Bowl! This game and another one which I will mention later (You have a good idea what it is, don’t you) are what makes this game seems so good you’d think the Watch Water Boil League was awesome! Falcons have more talent even though their record doesn’t speak for themselves.

St. Louis @ Carolina: Panthers. Panthers have been killing me so far this season, I pick them, they lose. I don’t pick them, they win. Cam Newton had a good game last week against the Vikings so I’ll ride the train once again.

Cincinnati @ Detroit: Lions. Gotta feel good if you’re a Detroit sports fan, Red Wings playing well, Pistons… meh, Tigers up by a touchdown right now against the Red Sox (!!@!# and some more curse words), and the Lions are 4-2 on the season so far. Like the sexy matchup in this one. Sexy like a hot girl breaking the ice on you and much more. Like the Lions, sticking with them.

Buffalo @ Miami: Bills. No upset pick this week so far so I’ll just say that the Bills win against the Fins. Call me crazy, say that the Dolphins are -8 favorites at home, say that the Patriots will choke against the Jets this week. Nope. Bills.

New England @ New York Jets: Patriots. The Jets have shown glimpses of greatness, and have shown glimpses of how shitty they are. I’m not a Patriots fan but with the Red Sox doing well this year I’ll give the Pats some leeway in this one.

Dallas @ Philadelphia: Eagles. The annual Boo Game for the Eagles fans as their arch-nemesis the Cowgirls come to town hoping to gain a 1st place spot in the division. Yeah the division is really that wide open. Cowpies could win but feel much safer in the Eagles rather than the Cowsills.

Chicago @ Washington: Bears. Bears will take care of business at the Capital and Barack Obama’s team, the Bears, will show people how wrong they are in wronging Obama. Jay Cutler for Congress!

San Francisco @ Tennessee: Niners. Not much else to really mention in this one. It is a late game and there could be the sort of jet lag that West coast teams have known to get bad in, but being a -4 favorite against a 3-3 Titans team is good. Eh why not the Niners.

Houston @ Kansas City: KC. Texans are in a huge mess right now and the Chiefs are in a good place right now being undefeated and knocking on Peyton Manning’s Broncos front door. Who would boo their own player, especially one that gets injured? Right the same people that are fans of the Astros, I get it now.

Baltimore @ Pittsburgh: Ravens. Renewed vigor for the Steelers as they picked up their very first win of the season. Unfortunately in this rivalry of rivalries the Ravens have the upper hand, at least they should have in this game. Joe Flacco isn’t always known for his clutch play day in, day out.

San Diego @ Jacksonville: Chargers. How many points will the Chargers be favored in this game? 7.5! Not as much as the point spread of the Broncos/Jaguars game that the Broncos failed to cover (Le sigh). For the rest of this game I will talk about what I would do if I went on a first date with Wooey Zooey: a bowling game or two, dinner at Applebees, and then a walk around downtown Fargo (very romantic indeed). This isn’t really exactly a date specifically for her but for any girl that ends up deciding to date a introverted nerd like me.

Denver @ Indianapolis: The highlight of the week comes to you in Indianapolis, Indiana where the former hero faces off against the future hero. In these sorts of matchups the former hero wins the matchup (Montana over Young, Favre over Rodgers) and I’m sticking with the Broncos in this one. Indy has weapons but enough to beat Peyton Manning? I don’t know.

Minnesota @ New York Giants: G-men. Please Giants for god’s sake win this game. BSPN needs something to bitch about and talk about and since the Vikings aren’t doing enough to save their season, take this moment to salvage your season by winning this game against an inferior Vikings team that trashed my hopes and Adrian Peterson’s (I wanted #28 to score 4-5 touchdowns, since his 2-year old son died, I wanted him to actually win the game). That’s coming from a Packer fan that has mad respect for AP.

NFL Week 6 Picks

Standard

Okay so I didn’t do a Week 5 recap of NFL action, but I did manage to get to a 10-4 finish to finish off the week. Have been working quite a bit for me to not really do posts as much as I should but I’m doing this before the Bears vs Giants game tonight. Will the Giants get their first win of the season? Will New Orleans lose to the Patriots and thus end their unbeaten streak? Will Atlanta beat their bye week? Will Zooey Deschanel come to my door topless and enter my apartment not giving a f**k? All these questions and more will be answered in this weeks picks!

New York Giants @ Chicago: Bears. I’m undefeated in Thursday Night Football picks (including the opening night matchup). Thus I am going with the safe pick in the Bears, as I feel the Giants woes will still continue to topple them.

Green Bay @ Baltimore: Packers. Sadly this game isn’t on in my area and I will be working for most of the second half. The 2-2 Packers travel to Baltimore and they should get a W in this one in a good fashion, always a safe bet with Aaron Rodgers as the captain.

Philadelphia @ Tampa Bay: Eagles. I don’t think anyone realizes how wide open the NFC East is (not also to mention how bad the division is), and certainly if you are an Eagles fan this is an opportunity to gain some momentum in the division, and the Buccaneers are looking like a Pirate on a sinking ship, I don’t think Captain Schiano is going to go down with it however.

Pittsburgh @ New York Jets: Jets. I feel weird even picking the Jets. The team to be frank wasn’t supposed to go anywhere and yet they win against a former playoff team in the Falcons. Why not the Jets?

Carolina @ Minnesota; Panthers. This game is basically an awful one to really even comprehend. Both of them are bad and this game could go either way and I’ll just go with the Panthers.

Oakland @ Kansas City: Chiefs. I don’t have much to say in this one.

St. Louis @ Houston: Texans. Let’s just say that the Texans should win this one. I’m not hopeful for the Rams in this one.

Cincinnati @ Buffalo: Bengals. A good win against the Patriots last week has given the Bengals out of my doghouse even though I didn’t pick them to beat the Patriots. Bills are still a rebuilding team but an exciting one.

Detroit @ Cleveland: Lions. This game just might be the best game of the week that isn’t on the late slate of games. Both of these teams have improved quite a bit. Still going to have to go with the Lions even though a part of me says the Browns continue their Cinderella run this season.

Tennessee @ Seattle: Seahawks. Very very safe pick in the Seahawks in this one. Especially if it is in Seattle where its louder than a Who concert (I’m talking about 1970’s Who concerts not today’s concerts mind you, Keith Moon’s death killed the Who).

Jacksonville @ Denver: Broncos. Come on, don’t even bother picking the Jaguars in this one.

New Orleans @ New England: Saints. The last time these two teams met was in 2009 when the Saints won the Super Bowl in 2010. The Saints won this regular season matchup in 2009 and then beat the Colts in the Super Bowl. I’m not saying that this Saints team will win this year’s Super Bowl but I feel safe with the Saints.

Arizona @ San Francisco: Niners. The other late game on FOX and this one isn’t going to turn out well for the Cards in this one. Pick the 49ers, trust me.

Washington @ Dallas; Redskins. The Redskins played like fire the last time they were playing at Dallas in last year’s Thanksgiving game. RGIII was playing well and i trust the Redskins in this game. It could end badly for them but why not?

Indianapolis @ San Diego: Colts. Another Monday, another crappy Monday night football match-up. Andrew Luck has beaten the Sophomore slump so far in his career and I feel good about the Colts.

NFL Week 3 Picks

Standard

Week 3 of the NFL regular season is just a mere 14 hours away as I’m writing this. Get intense, get excited, well almost all of these games aren’t that great. Boring games. Probably the best game is the Green Bay @ Cincinnati game on the early slate. Just one of those weeks every once in a while where the Sunday slate of games just don’t appeal to the hard-core fan. Still I have to do picks, since I try to predict the games good or bad. Here are my picks. Picked Kansas City to beat the Eagles on Thursday with a record of 3-0 on Thursday night picks. Just so you know.

Green Bay @ Cincinnati: Packers. The 1-1 Packers head to the Jungle to take on the Bengals in a possible Super Bowl matchup. Aaron Rodgers will get it done, I like it.

St. Louis @ Dallas: Cowboys. Once again I will choose the Cowboys over an average team in the Rams. I mean the Rams are average, and if they were better I’d take them anyday. Even against average teams the Cowboys look bad. I’ll take the Boys.

San Diego @ Tennessee: Titans. Probably going on a whim in this one since the Chargers shocked the Eagles last week. I could just even say that the Chargers are going to win, but I’ll go on the shock level to pick the Titans. At least they’re not the Jaguars.

Cleveland @ Minnesota: Vikings. The Viqueens get an easy win against the Browns at the HumptyDump. Unless Ponder throws balls to the Browns, the Vikes will win. ESPN was at my hometown this weekend and Sam Ponder was there, and she and I mean her, the goddess of goddesses herself, was at Fargo. Better watch yourself Christian Ponder or Samantha might be at Tom’s apartment cuddling up against me batting me with those gorgeous eyes watching Scrubs episodes. Alright enough.

Tampa Bay @ New England: Buccaneers. Gotta give this an upset special perhaps. I want to give the Patriots some slack in this one, but the Buccaneers should have a few quite a bit more talent to handle themselves. Tampa with the upset.

Arizona @ New Orleans: Saints. Drew Brees, enough said. Who ‘Dat?

Detroit @ Washington: Redskins. Everyone’s doubting on the Redskins in this one. Hard week for RGIII, and I feel this is the week for the ‘Skins to rebound on their season and take care of business against the Lions. Plus its at home.

New York Giants @ Carolina: Giants. These two teams seem to play quite a bit over the past few years. Maybe a bit of a rivalry in this one, but the Giants have owned the Panthers in last year’s matchup and I like the G-men’s chances in this one.

Houston @ Baltimore: Texans. If this was last year I’d take the Ravens in this matchup, but the Ravens are a different team than last year, more different than normal. Going to be a quite an interesting game. Perhaps the Texans might blow this but I’ll go with the money on the Texans.

Atlanta @ Miami: Falcons. I’ll take the Falcons in this one. The game is perhaps a good test on how the Falcons will do this season on the road. Important game for the Dolphins too to take the next level.

Buffalo @ New York Jets: Bills. Easy pick in this one. Unless the Bills blow it all sky high.

Indianapolis @ San Francisco: 49ers. Perhaps another good game on the slate other than the GB/CIN game. I feel good about the Niners in this one.

Jacksonville @ Seattle: Seahawks. Come on, this isn’t even worth a prediction, its more like a guarantee.

Chicago @ Pittsburgh: Bears. Two former pre-merger teams taking on each other. Both with great tradition and history. Feel good about the Bears since the Steelers aren’t like the Steelers of a few years ago.

Oakland @ Denver: Broncos. Another easy pick, Raiders aren’t good. Broncos will thrash them by 20 points or more. Game is on ESPN and most of their games on Monday night is shit. Going safe with the Broncos.

NFL Week 1 Recap

Standard

Alright the first week of the NFL season has completed. It happened a few days ago on Monday night. It was an interesting week with more safeties than normal, like more than normal. Still did pretty well on this weeks picks and here’s how it all happen.

Baltimore 27, Denver 49: Had Denver winning. The Broncos got embarassed in the divisional game in last year’s playoffs, and boy did Peyton Manning not disappoint the fans, with not 1, not 2, definitely not 3, never mind 4, not 5, negatively 6, but 7, count it, 7 touchdown passes, the first time in 44 years, you’d have to look back into the late 1960’s to find something like that. Baltimore is definitely in trouble. Big trouble.

Green Bay 28, San Francisco 34: Had Green Bay winning. The Packers did not get embarrassed unlike the divisional game last year but they still let Kaepernick run all over the defense with 412 passing yards and 3 touchdowns. As much as its a game where people blame on the officials it still was a good test on how far as a team we can be if we can stay healthy. Losing to the defending NFC champs by 6 points is nothing to scoff at, at least to me.

New England 23, Buffalo 21: Had New England winning. The game was definitely a lot closer than I was wanting it to be. That’s for sure, It seemed that the loss of Gronk and Hernandez has done quite a bit of damage in terms of the Patriots offense. How much Buffalo held the Pats by the throat is extroardinary. Still there is no such thing as an easy win in the NFL, of course unless you play the Jaguars.

Seattle 12, Carolina 7: Had Seattle winning. Never expected this game to be a bit of a defensive battle, it might speak more for the Panthers defense than the Seahawks defense to hold Russell Wilson to one touchdown and 320 yards passing. The over/under was 44.5, just throwing that out there.

Miami 23, Cleveland 10: Had Miami winning. Well Ryan Tannehill led the Dolphins to victory against the Browns. Kept Mrs. Tannehill happy. Good day for the Tannehill’s. Browns, meh, could be a long season who knows.

Vikings 24, Lions 34: Had Vikings winning. The Vikes couldn’t seal the deal with the Lions, a 4-12 team last season. Reggie Bush had a great game for the Lions and his effort helped the Motor City Kitties to victory. Sam Ponder isn’t a happy lady, I’m sure.

Oakland 17, Indianapolis 21: Had Indianapolis winning. The Colts, boy those Colts nearly walked away in defeat against what was thought to be a piss-poor Raiders team, but Terrell Pryor kept the Raidas in the game and nearly gave his team a 1-0 record against a former playoff team.

Kansas City 28, Jacksonville 2: Had KC winning. Jaguars as I had feared did put up points in this game, unfortunately it just wasn’t enough to call victory against Andy Reid’s Chiefs. Not much else to say, I didn’t get the game so I can’t complain much.

Atlanta 17, New Orleans 23: Had New Orleans winning. The return of Sean Payton as the Saints head coach was felt all around, and his QB, Drew Brees, put up monster numbers against the former NFC South division champs. Thought it was going to be a shootout.

Tampa Bay 17, New York Jets 18: Had Tampa Bay winning. Hugest shock of the weekend, which is surprising. The Geno Smith bandwagon is starting to get a bit bigger, maybe there was 1 person on the bandwagon before, but now its like 200 or so after the game was done. Jets might do alright this season.

Tennessee 16, Pittsburgh 9: Had Steelers winning. The Steel City was in shock after this one. It felt like such an odd game, it started off with the Titans gaffing the kickoff which ended up being a safety. After that it was much more stranger. Pittsburgh was favored by -6. Huge upset.

Arizona 24, St. Louis 27: Had the Rams winning. The Rams escaped with a win while being the second late game on the afternoon. This game was an interesting one indeed. To let the Cardinals get 24 points has to say something for the Rams defense in this one. Somehow.

New York Giants 31, Dallas 36: Had the G-Men winning. The Cowboys played like the Giants of old, and the Giants played like the Cowboys of old. Two different teams on one field. The Giants gave up 6 turnovers and still almost walked away with a win in this one. The Giants bandwagon has to be certainly losing some fans. Giants definitely have to regroup after this one, for sure.

Cincinnati 21, Chicago 24: Had Chicago winning. Boy this was a pretty good game. The upset special was that I picked the Bears to win it. Marc Trestman proved me right and got the victory. Us MSUM alums must have the right state of mind.

Philadelphia 33, Washington 27: Had the Redskins winning. The game was a tale of two teams. One was trying to stay at the top, and one that was trying to get to the top. Chip Kelly’s debut with his high-powered offense did not disappoint in this one. Redskins were looking the other way as Michael Vick captained the ship. Pretty nuts to see how well the Eagles can do this season.

Houston 31, San Diego 28: Had Houston winning. Oh boy this game was going to be an awful game if you were a Texans fan. Unfortunately for the Chargers, a new head coach, new frame of mind, does not equal a new, different team. Choking kind of team.

2013:
Week 1: 12-4
2012:
164-90-2

Thursday Night Football:

New York Jets @ New England: Patriots. Despite last weeks narrow win, I still like the Patriots in this one. Fortunately for the Jets defense, the Patriots are down by a few receivers, so i still expect a Patriots win over their divisional rivals.
